Today has several National Day Calendar entries that are worthy of use for our devotions. For instance, today is National I Am Day. The day was established by two women’s organizations, S.H.E Inc 501c3 Sisters Helping Each-Other and the She ROCKS It. The intent was for women to encourage women with messages of self-affirmation.
Joyce Dawkins, founder of She Rocks It Organization writes, “For years I witnessed successful everyday women going above and beyond their daily jobs to do things that impacted and changed the lives of others. These women didn’t serve and give to receive recognition, they gave and served because it was their purpose and passion in life. They saw this as a way of fulfilling their life purpose.”1
My issue with the celebration of I Am affirmations is that affirmations are devoid of recognition of the God who made those accomplishments possible. The I AM statements say things like, “I AM beautiful and unique. I AM strong and independent. I AM an amazing human being. I AM resilient and brave. I AM more than enough. I AM enough. I AM learning to become the best version of myself.” These are humanistically driven statements.
Affirmation statements are not inherently wrong. As a Christian, I can make many I AM statements. These are not statements drawn from psychological platitudes. They are drawn from the pages of Scripture. Because of Jesus and His gift of salvation, I can boldly and Biblically affirm that …
“I am created in the image of God.” Genesis 1:27
“I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Psalm 139:14
“I am created to have a relationship with God.” 2 Peter 3:9
“I am saved.” Romans 10:13
“I am a new creature in Christ Jesus.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
“I am forgiven.” Colossians 2:13
“I am justified and redeemed.” Galatians 3:13, 24
“I am chosen and called.” Ephesians 1:4, 4:4
“I am a child of the King.” Matthew 5:9
“I am the temple of the Holy Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 6:19
“I am eternally secure.” John 10:27-30
“I am able to worship God.” John 4:23-24
“I am able to serve God.” Colossians 3:24
“I am an ambassador for Christ.” 2 Corithians 5:20
“I am clothed in His righteousness and the garments of salvation.” Isaiah 61:10
“I am an heir and joint heir with Jesus.” Romans 8:17
“I am loved with a love from which I can never be separated.” Romans 8:35-39
“I am more than conquerors through Him that loved us.” Romans 8:37
“I am able to do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4:13
“I am complete in Christ.” Colossians 2:10
“I am seated with Christ in Heavenly places.” Ephesians 2:6
“I am a citizen of Heaven.” Philippians 3:20
Every one of these are Biblical. Look up the references for yourself. NONE of these are humanistically driven. May we always remember that without Jesus, we are nothing and can do nothing. Take these final verses to heart.
“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
“Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God…” (2 Corinthians 3:5
